Generation Y

For you, it’s ‘me-me-me’; for me, it’s ‘who’?
What spawn is this that mocks the mirror’s gaze
With lumpen dreams that cry ‘me-too, me-too’ —
Our children? God forgive our yesterdays.

For those, like me, who are now lost in the ‘generation naming game’ I print the handy table below. Generation Y is often shortened to GenY and has many slang names, often touching on the ‘Me-Generation’ and puns on Narcissus and mirrors. Generation Jones is sometimes referred to as Baby Boomers II, like a sequel movie.

World War I 1922 to 1927
Post-war / Depression 1928 to 1941
Baby Boomers 1942 to 1953
Generation Jones 1954 to 1965
Generation X 1966 to 1977
Generation Y 1978 to 1998

This poem is a work in progress. It is incomplete, unfinished and has not been revised. It is meant only to offer a glimpse into the notebook of a poet at work. Please do not post it onto other sites or publish it in any form. Thank you — Felix Dennis
